Stuck together: the hope of Christian witness in a polarized world.J. Nelson Kraybill - 2023 - Harrisonburg, Virginia: Herald Press.
What does it mean to be a peacemaker in a polarized world? It can feel as if the world-and the church-has never been more polarized. But when we feel worn down by the chasms dividing us, we can take hope from the early Christian vision of God uniting all things in Christ, a hope that can lead us to act. Stuck Together explores Bible stories and narratives ancient and modern that inspire us to open hearts and minds to persons with (...)

A missiology of progress: Assessing advancement in the Bible translation movement.Kirk J. Franklin - 2020 - HTS Theological Studies 76 (1):9.
Statistical analysis has been a common method for determining progress in missional activity. In the case of Bible translation, measurable statistics have been readily available showing progress. However, there have been gaps such as biblical, sociological, theological and missiological factors. The aim of this study is to consider broader factors than just quantifiable measurements that could be used to develop a missiological foundation for missional progress, especially for Bible translation. The setting was to analyse inputs from leaders within the Bible (...)

How can the Reformation’s focus on faithfulness to Scripture inspire us for mission?Kirk J. Franklin - 2018 - HTS Theological Studies 74 (1):1-9.
Since the 16th century Protestant Reformation, the issue of divine inspiration and authority of the Bible has stood at the centre of Reformed faith. The question asked then, which is still with us, is whether the Bible is sufficient and complete as a revelation from God? Conflicts that arose during the Reformation still brew today, albeit with different players and contexts. Furthermore, how does the faithfulness to Scripture by reformers, such as William Tyndale and Martin Luther, and pre-Reformer, John Wycliffe, (...)

Searching for shalom: Transformation in the mission of God and the Bible translation movement.Kirk J. Franklin - 2020 - HTS Theological Studies 76 (4):1-10.
The background of this study was to explore the Old Testament vision of shalom and determine how it was relevant to its holistic mission, Bible translation, transformational development and the world’s challenges and trends. The aim of this research was to create a framework to serve practitioners and theorists associated with the Bible translation movement and its intersection with transformational development. The setting for the study was the consideration of factors affecting Bible translation and transformational development in the context of (...)

“Better World”: A Case Study of A Korean Megachurch’s NGO.J. Nelson Jennings - 2018 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 35 (4):206-226.
This is a case study about Better World, the NGO of Seoul-based Onnuri Church. The article is more descriptive than prescriptive and proceeds more inductively regarding explanations for BW’s practices than deductively evaluating BW according to predetermined models. This case study seeks to understand, present, and analyze BW in relation to larger development themes associated with Christian development activities. More than providing answers, the article hopes to sharpen questions. After considering the historical development of various programs, the study examines BW’s (...)

Respecting What We Destroy: Reflections on Human Embryo Research.Michael J. Meyer & Lawrence J. Nelson - 2001 - Hastings Center Report 31 (1):16-23.
The thought that human embryos could command moral respect yet also be acceptably used in medical research has struck some as incoherent. Given some assumptions about why they deserve respect, however, the thought is not objectionable, indeed not even unusual.

“A Secular Age” in a Mission Perspective: A Review Article.J. Andrew Kirk - 2011 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 28 (3):172-181.
This is a review of an extraordinary tome by Charles Taylor, A secular Age. The book contains about 800 pages of intricate analysis and debate.1 This review attempts to summarise the author’s discussion of secularism under a few key headings and then offers a brief discussion of the material in each case. In the final section, it offers some personal reflections on the missiological implications of his main themes.

‘God is on our side’: The anatomy of an ideology.J. Andrew Kirk - 2010 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 27 (4):239-247.
The article discusses the twin and, to a certain extent, reciprocal ideas of ‘Manifest Success’ and ‘Manifest Destiny.’ It argues that, as developed respectively by certain streams of thought within Islamic communities and religiously motivated political movements within the USA, they both display strong ideological characteristics in the negative sense. Apart from the historical evidence that contradicts their utopian aspirations, the sense of identity and destiny which they wish to inspire is politically dangerous for being illusory. Muslims and Christians need (...)

An epithelial tissue in Dictyostelium challenges the traditional origin of metazoan multicellularity.Daniel J. Dickinson, W. James Nelson & William I. Weis - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (10):833-840.
We hypothesize that aspects of animal multicellularity originated before the divergence of metazoans from fungi and social amoebae. Polarized epithelial tissues are a defining feature of metazoans and contribute to the diversity of animal body plans. The recent finding of a polarized epithelium in the non‐metazoan social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum demonstrates that epithelial tissue is not a unique feature of metazoans, and challenges the traditional paradigm that multicellularity evolved independently in social amoebae and metazoans. An alternative view, presented here, is (...)

    Philosophical Theology and East-West Dialogue.Hisakazu Inagaki & J. Nelson Jennings - 2000 - Rodopi.
Philosophical Theology and East-West Dialogue is a unique philosophical and theological analysis of certain key interactions between Eastern and Western thinkers. The book on the one hand contrasts general traits of Eastern, Buddhist thought and Western, Greek thought. However, in doing so it focuses on influential philosophers and theologians who manifest particular instances of wider issues. The result is a careful examination of basic questions that offers both broad implications and concrete specificity in its approach. The book itself is an (...)

Divergent Effects of Metaphoric Company Logos: Do They Convey What the Company Does or What I Need?Mark J. Landau, Noelle M. Nelson & Lucas A. Keefer - 2015 - Metaphor and Symbol 30 (4):314-338.
Many corporate logos use pictorial metaphors to influence consumer attitudes. Priming concrete concepts—by means of logo exposure or other procedures—changes attitudes toward dissimilar abstract targets in metaphor-consistent ways. It is assumed, however, that observers apply a logo’s metaphor externally to interpret the company and its service. This research examined the possibility that observers may instead apply that metaphor internally to interpret their current condition and hence their need for the company’s service. We hypothesized that the same logo can have divergent (...)

Promoting Resilience to Food Commercials Decreases Susceptibility to Unhealthy Food Decision-Making.Oh-Ryeong Ha, Haley J. Killian, Ann M. Davis, Seung-Lark Lim, Jared M. Bruce, Jarrod J. Sotos, Samuel C. Nelson & Amanda S. Bruce - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Children are vulnerable to adverse effects of food advertising. Food commercials are known to increase hedonic, taste-oriented, and unhealthy food decisions. The current study examined how promoting resilience to food commercials impacted susceptibility to unhealthy food decision-making in children. To promote resilience to food commercials, we utilized the food advertising literacy intervention intended to enhance cognitive skepticism and critical thinking, and decrease positive attitudes toward commercials. Thirty-six children aged 8–12 years were randomly assigned to the food advertising literacy intervention or (...)

    Problems and paradigms: Physiological analysis of bone appetite (Osteophagia).D. A. Denton, J. R. Blair-West, M. J. McKinley & J. F. Nelson - 1986 - Bioessays 4 (1):40-43.
The vegetation eaten by animals on large areas of several continents is deficient in phosphate and deleterious effects on physiology, particularly reproduction, ensue. Records on bone chewing behaviour by both pastoral andwild game animals extend over two centuries. In laboratory investigation of this apt behaviour it has been shown that the appetite for bones is innate and specific and cued predominantly by olfactory stimuli. It is suppressed by rapidly increasing the plasma phosphate concentration to normal but not influenced by increasing (...)

The Great New Wilderness Debate.J. Baird Callicott & Michael P. Nelson (eds.) - 1998 - University of Georgia Press.
The Great New Wilderness Debate is an expansive, wide-ranging collection that addresses the pivotal environmental issues of the modern era. This eclectic volume on the varied constructions of “wilderness” reveals the recent controversies that surround those conceptions, and the gulf between those who argue for wilderness "preservation" and those who argue for "wise use." J. Baird Callicott and Michael P. Nelson have selected thirty-nine essays that provide historical context, range broadly across the issues, and set forth the positions of (...)
